An Evening of Standards: Lucy Yeghiazaryan Trio Returns to Falmouth

Some voices sound like they were made for a smoky New York club. Lucy Yeghiazaryan’s sounds like it was made for the whole Great American Songbook, and on Friday, October 23 at 7:00 PM, she brings it back to Cape Cod.

The Lucy Yeghiazaryan Trio returns to the West Falmouth Library for an intimate evening of straight-ahead jazz, as part of this year’s Falmouth Jazz “Women Who Lead” series. If you’ve been waiting for an excuse to hear world-class jazz without driving to Manhattan, this is it.

From Contraband Records to Birdland

Lucy’s jazz education started in an unlikely place: post-Soviet Armenia, in front of her father’s collection of once-contraband jazz records. Before she could speak English, she was imitating Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan, learning phrasing and swing by ear from the masters themselves.

She moved to the United States at 12, and that early apprenticeship paid off. Lucy was named one of the top ten finalists in the 2015 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, one of the most demanding stages in the music. Her debut album, Blue Heaven (Cellar Live, 2019), announced a new vocal force on the scene.

Today she is a leading voice in straight-ahead jazz, blending the richness of her Armenian heritage with a deep love for the ultimate American artform. You’ll find her regularly at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Birdland, Mezzrow and Symphony Space. She has shared the stage with Harold Mabern, Houston Person, Terell Stafford, Peter Bernstein, Emmet Cohen and Bernadette Peters, among many others.

What to expect: warmth, elegance and real emotional depth. Lucy doesn’t just sing the standards. She lives in them.

The Trio

Lucy is joined by two musicians who know exactly how to frame a great voice:

• Greg Ruggiero, guitar. A longtime collaborator, Greg is a founding member of Lucy’s quartet and her main arranger. The chemistry between them is years in the making.
• Marshall Wood, bass. A familiar and beloved presence on the Falmouth Jazz stage, Marshall anchors the band with a swinging, rock-solid pulse.

Voice, guitar and bass is one of jazz’s most intimate lineups. Every note has room to breathe, and in a room the size of the West Falmouth Library, you’ll hear all of them.

Part of “Women Who Lead”

Falmouth Jazz launched “Women Who Lead” in 2026 to spotlight women bandleaders and women-featured ensembles. The need is real: research from the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice finds women make up only about 15 percent of jazz faculty nationwide.

This season has already brought artists like Yoko Miwa, Donna Byrne and Nicole Zuraitis to Falmouth. Lucy’s return is a highlight of the fall lineup, and her second appearance in the series. We’re thrilled to have her back.
